Busy morn at Fly Flatts / Whoopers at Mixenden

FLY FLATTS            Good move of mostly Herring gulls

                                1 pair Stonechat

MIXENDEN               5 Whooper Swan
                                Taken from top of Whitegate.

A bright, clear sunny morning at Fly Flatts with a cloud-less sky on a light NW>2 at 1 degree.
A very icy drive over the top road with frost and ice.
A busy morning in the sky with an early move of Woodpigeons, drying up at 0830hrs.
Next were trans Pennine Pink Footed Geese on the move west to east but well to the south of my position and visible only through the scope, possibly as far away as Brighouse. Impossible to count but 1 large skein was followed by 3 more smaller skeins.
Big gulls were heading >NE with approximately 170 gulls, the majority being Herring but all high and direct with none stopping off on the water.
Very little on the deck with a single Meadow Pipit and a pair of Stonechat in the compound whilst 32 Mallard and 2 Canadas were on the water.
On the way to Fly this morning I did my usual check of Mixenden reservoir from the top road seeing nothing other than gulls, but on my way home check, 5 Whooper Swans were on the water. These swans must have dropped in between 0730 and 1015 hrs unless they were hidden under the near banking and out of sight.
The big move today was possible due to the wind turning back to the east overnight tonight bringing rain for morning, and no doubt a capful of fog for the tops. Oh well, it was good whilst it lasted.
