Male Ringed Plover
Female
Strange to find a single Herring gull on the west bank
Thought it must be sickly until it flew off.
3rd winter, still slight brown on primary coverts.
A clear cold morning at Fly Flatts but bitterly cold at 1 degree in the N>4 with a mix of dark clouds and sunshine.
An unexpected start to the morning on the journey up there with a single Cormorant >E over Bradshaw. Fly Flatts was noisy with Canadas and Curlews but very little else.
A single Skylark was by the top gate but all those from the Nolstar field had dispersed.
Two Raven were over the Nab as well as 2 Buzzard briefly whilst a walk on an icy cold west bank found nothing of note.
The 2 Ringed Plover are still present along with 5 Lapwing but the 2 Oystercatchers seemed to have dropped down to Cold Edge Dams.
Back at the boatyard a final scope around produced a gull that had just landed on the west bank but mostly hidden by the grass just showing a very white head and pale grey mantle. Being a single bird, and in an area where I seldom get gulls, Kittiwake sprang to mind so another dash round to the west bank to investigate.
As I got in a position to see the bird, though at distance, it turned out to be a 3rd winter Herring gull so thinking it could be a sickly bird I got nearer, only to see it fly off >N. Oh well, it was worth a try.
The weather is looking reasonable for tomorrow but the light wind is back to the NE then E so a good chance of fog if the temperature rises.
