A 7th day of fog but in the afternoon for a change, Fly Flatts, (permit only)

just 3 gulls present ,1 YL Herring and 2 LBBs
  •

Waders at last, 2 Common Sandpiper

                    SE corner alive with Wheatears

All Wheatears in autumn plumage now.

A clear morning with light drizzle throughout on a very light SE>2 at 15 degrees but good to be able to see for a change. By late afternoon the mist was rolling in and by half way through the watch the heavens opened and visibility was cut down to a few yards with dense fog. I thought this morning it was too good to be true without fog but that soon altered.
A morning walk on the west bank found the SE corner alive with Wheatears and Meadow Pipits whilst Willow Warblers and Reed Buntings were in the boatyard tree.
Nearing the NW corner 2 Common Sandpipers were making their way along the cobbled bank before flying across the inlet channel onto the muddy north bank. No gulls present this morning but nice to have waders appearing just as I was giving up hope.
Meadow Pipits, Swallows and House Martins were on the move giving it a feel of early autumn whilst a noisy Raven flew overhead.
Late afternoon and just time to get back on the west bank to check the only 3 gulls present across on the north shore. Two of the birds were adult Lesser Black Backed whilst the third bird was the one that was present yesterday which I had down as a  3rd summer Yellow Legged Herring but some features not right . This bird is currently under review as possibly being a Caspian going by the pictures on yesterdays blog where it was stood in the water. See what the outcome is.
