Snipe up in the gloom.
1500 hrs and back to Fly Flatts with the days heavy rain still continuing though the wind had changed to NE>3 with low cloud and fog waiting in the wings.
As this morning things were quiet with just a few Common Sandpipers and 2 Oystercatchers active whilst a scope all around the bankings failed to produce a single Dunlin.
In the sky Snipe were active with around 5 up drumming in the distance before settling back down in the fields.
Swifts were birds of the day with a constant flow throughout, all moving fast and >N in the lee of the east ridge and Nab.
By 1615 hrs I,d got a reet good soaking and starved t' dearth but one of those days when you dont want to go with the smell of moving birds in the air. It had the same effect on HC at Leeshaw this morning as when I left he was soaked through but still gazing skyward behind his tripod. A true dedicated birder ignoring the conditions through years of standing out recording visible migration.
By 1630 hrs I,d no choice but leave as the fog rolled in cutting out visibility along with the team were nattering for their tea. A site meeting with Bentleys in the morning which should be interesting if this fog persists, we,ll be lucky to find each other.
