LEESHAW Red Necked Grebe avoiding the gulls
Good count of Herring gull
LEEMING 53 Herring gull present
Single Grey Wagtail.
Another decent morning with 50% cloud and sunshine on an icy cold SW>4 at 3 degrees.
Leeshaw was alive with gulls ,both on the water and in the surrounding fields with around 300 Black Headed, c100 Common and a good count of around 50 Herring gull. The Black Headed gulls were continuously harassing the Red Necked Grebe every time it dived and came up with a small fish, though it didn't seem to bother it.
Around 150 Greylag and c 60 Canadas were in the big field along with the single Pink Footed goose as well as 24 Lapwing.
A pair of Teal were skulking in the reeds at the edge of the water whilst a female Goosander and 2 Cormorant were also present. Otherwise it was down to the usuals and no returning Oystercatcher or Curlew as yet.
Nothing much doing in the Sladen Valley at Lower Laithe reservoir with a pair of Tufted on the water along with 12 Mallard and 8 Canadas. A lower count of gulls here with c 50 Black Headed, 10 Common and 8 Herring.
A stop off at Leeming on the way home found another impressive count of Herring gull with 53 on the water as well as 15 Common and around 100 Black Headed.
Nothing on the water here other than the usual Mallards plus a Grey Wagtail in the outlet.
Looking decent for the morning , if the overnight fog clears in time, with a light SW and cloudy sunshine at 4 degrees.
