8 Common Sandpipers present
Most Curlews have now left
Ringed Plover with new arrival, Dunlin, (schinzii)
Very wet Ringed Plover, male.
A terrible morning for June at Fly Flatts starting off with fog and heavy drizzle which cleared for about one hour and then by 0930hrs the fog returned with horizontal drizzle driven on by a SW>5 at 9 degrees. By 0945hrs it was lights out with nil visibility.
Nice to get a new arrived Dunlin which have been scarce this spring. I had odd sightings early May when they peaked at 3 birds, had there been exposed shore I would have double figures at this time. In 2019 when the reservoir was part drained I had a count of 48 Dunlin present at the end of May. Wader-wise, just the usual Ringed Plovers, Redshank, Common Sandpipers and Oystercatchers with the majority of Lapwings now gone and only 4 pair of Curlew left, all with young.
A sum up of the wildfowl showed around 300 Canada Geese with c 100 goslings and 4 pair of Greylag with 28 goslings. At least 3 pair of Mallard have bred and amazingly there are still several young that have survived the gulls. Just 27 LBBs and 3 Herring present this morning.
A moderate westerly for morning but looking mainly cloudy and dry with good visibility.
