A bright sunny start at Fly Flatts but thick cloud to the west and North soon came across blanking out the sun by 0815 hrs but keeping good visibility with full cloud on a light SW>2 at 3 degrees.
The same thing happens every February, after a couple of good days, making you think you,re on your way, and then a dead halt for a few days. A real lull today at Fly Flatts with just 6 Reed Buntings in the compound plus the usual Canadas and Mallards on the water and that was it.
Strangely, not a single bird in the air and even the flock of Fieldfare had deserted the fields.
On the way back the ringed Black Headed gull was back in the Crossroads Inn field, standing out with its full summer plumage hood.
Mid afternoon and a wander around Mixenden reservoir was,nt a great deal better with nothing in the west bank trees and just 7 Canadas and 5 Mallard on the water.
A half decent count of 130 small gulls along with 2 Herring and ,at last, a Lesser Black Backed when a 2 CY dropped onto the water briefly. A very poor winter for gulls so far and not a Goldeneye in sight.
