Thornton Pond 19 Teal present
Taken in very heavy drizzle.
Pond no bigger than Raggalds Flood.
A day of heavy drizzle throughout on a moderate W>4 at 8 degrees.
A very wet visit this morning to Ogden to try get out of the wind and below the cloud base. Several small gulls on the water but visibility limited due to the horizontal drizzle piling across the water. A group of 4 Redpoll and 9 Chaffinch flew out of a pine tree and disappeared into the wood whilst a few Great and Coal tits were present.
An early finish here with the conditions becoming unworkable so off to Thornton to check out a flooded field that MP and KM keep an eye on. The pond is not much bigger than the Raggalds Flood but holds the water most of the year, drying out to mud in the summer.
A group of 9 Teal were on the water but a second visit mid afternoon produced 19 Teal and 5 Mallard along with 3 Common gull and an adult Herring flyover.
On the way home I had a second check on Ogden to look at the pre roost
gulls on the water but all very distant with disturbance from a YW rescue training group in the overflow and still poor visibility in the drizzle.
More rain and moderate westerlies forecast over the weekend.
