Proud Mallard mum with 9 new chicks.
If you want a family get a big un.
This pair of Canadas must be trying for benefits with a new family of 17.
1530 hrs at Fly Flatts with more blues skies and only 20 % cloud cover which was well to the west beyond the ridge leaving it clear for the sun to blast down. The only part of the weather which was satisfactory was a nice W/3 making it a bit more bearable to walk the banking.
The water was like a nursery with around 8 pair of Canadas , 1 pair of Greylag and 1 pair of Mallard all with good sized families. One pair of Canadas had an amazing 17 chicks.
Needless to say the skies were empty apart from the surprise of a single House Martin low over the water which is a bit of a mega this year though this was the only Hirundine and again no Swifts or Wheatear whilst 3 pair of Reed Bunting were in and out of the juncus.
Wader wise 7 Common Sandpipers were mobile still trying to find some decent shoreline but the Dunlin seem to have moved on .
Back at the Nolstar field just a handful of Mipits were present but no sign of the Goldies.
A report at work this morning by a local farmer that a Ring Necked Parakeet is being seen regular around the Shelf Moor trailer park field and visiting bird feeders at Corporal Lane. This is probably the same bird thats been seen on and off for a couple of years now.
