The only wader found today
Around 100 gulls, mostly LBBs with a few Herrings.
Nice to see the sole survivor of this Greylag pair
is now flying.
A disappointing day at Fly Flatts with good conditions this morning with 100% cloud cover and a light NW>3 then deteriorated this afternoon with sunshine and the slightest whiff of a >NE breeze bringing out the flies but not the birds. Light rain started as I left.
The only wader found throughout the day was the long staying and very lonely Ringed Plover. This bird has been holding territory by the SE corner ponds since June 15th running around in display mode and neck stretching in hopes of picking up a female but this has never happened. It has seen off several other male Ringed Plovers and at least 1 female and still hangs on with hopes of a mate though I should say its too late this season now.
Otherwise it was down to an early morning Short Eared Owl along with a Buzzard over the moor . Swifts were plentiful whilst around 100 gulls were on the north shoreline, mainly LBBs with a few Herring but still no return of the Yellow Legged.
I can almost smell those waders and Scoters heading for Fly Flatts now.
