Water well up the east shore now
Draining should start again this month
New arrival today, Little Ringed Plover
Before anyone panics about it being a schedule one bird, dont worry,
its not nesting, just lazing in the sun and keeping out of the
Ringed Plovers way.
Ringed Plover keeping a watchful eye.
A terrible day at Fly Flatts both a.m and p.m. with too much sun, too much blue sky, too much heat and too many flies with not enough breeze.
Other than that it turned out a bit better than expected, especially p.m.
when the long staying Ringed Plover, which I thought had left but re located this morning, was chasing a Little Ringed Plover around the pond area showing yet again that there is some wader movement ongoing. This bird being the 8th visitor this year as opposed to only 1 sighting last year.
With the noisy Ringed Plover flying round it flushed 2 Dunlin from an unseen area where they landed again but out of sight.
Around 100 big gulls were at the north end of the east shore but well disguised in a strong heat shimmer from the shoreline.
Just a point of interest :- Hollingworth Lake and Audenshaw reservoir that seem to be getting more than their share of Avocet sightings recently lies just 13 miles to the SW of Fly Flatts as the crow flies, or Avocet in this case. The 3 over Fly Flatts were heading >SW towards Hebden Bridge which , from Hebden Bridge, would take them over Withins Clough and Warland reservoir passing just to the east of Gorple and on to the Manchester reservoirs if thats where they were aiming for so hopefully we may end up in a flight path for this species.
