Ogden p.m.visit

The controversial juv at Ogden which I put as LBB.

                                               Common gull in autumn plumage
                                    Common gull in summer plumage

                                       Very noisy Common gull
2 Commons. Youngest bird on the right

A late afternoon check of Ogden, in heavy rain, to see if any more goodies had arrived proved fruitless with just 1 juv Gt Crested Grebe on the water and several small gulls with Common gull numbers increasing.
The juv Cormorant was still present and 3 LBB gulls.

Many thanks to DF for checking for the Ogden Scoters at lunch time in lashing rain which brings me on to the white under winged Scoter seen on my photos from Saturdays report.
Looking through all books and NK trawling the internet we could find nothing showing a Common Scoter with white under wings and no comments on my blog meaning this was a baffler.
Time for drastic measures so a text to expert birder Phil Cunningham at Flamborough who quickly,as always, solved the problem by texting back that this was a Common Scoter and the white was due to moult of the under wing coverts.
Just shows, you never stop learning in this game.
Phil has just undergone a heart by pass operation so speaking on behalf on all West Yorkshire birders we wish him a speedy recovery and all the best to Sue and Phil.  Many thanks for the prompt reply.
