Kestrel on a boat mast
1 of 4 Stonechat
A late start this morning waiting for the fog to clear so did,nt arrive at Fly Flatts until 0845 hrs to find the mist cleared leaving a low cloud base and fog over the western ridge. A light SE>2 was cool at 4 degrees. By 0945 hrs the fog was rolling in again blanking the area out as I left.
Understandably in the conditions, there was very little going on with just a few BH gulls on the water as well as 5 Canadas and the usual Mallards. A single Lapwing was on the north shore throughout whilst small passerines were lively in the compound with 4 Stonechat, 6 Wrens, which is a record up there, plus the unusual visit from a male Blackbird.
Pink Footed geese were again on the move with a skein just to the south of me heading >W but only given away by their contact calls as they passed over unseen in the cloud at 0915 hrs. A second skein passed over DJS at Lee Mount at 1025 hrs and a third skein over NK at Ogden at 1116 hrs. Thanks to both for the calls.
A quick and quiet morning but good to get out again after 3 days grounded.
Heavy rain forecast for tomorrow but at least the wind is away from the east with a moderate north then north west which hopefully will be an end to the fog.
