This was the scene just 7 years ago today on the 5/1/2013 when 44 Barnacle geese landed in the field at Leeshaw reservoir. :-
44 Barnacles with 3 Pink Footed in with them.
Pink Footed
Barnacles and Canada
An amazing sight back in 2013 and exactly 7 years to the day . The Barnacles dropped firstly onto the water then across to the stubble field before moving to a higher field difficult to see but stayed a couple of days. History has never repeated itself to my knowledge although there are that many fields around the area , several of which are out of visibility, its possible for them to come and go unseen.
At the moment there are around 300 Greylags less than a mile away in fields by Upper Marsh which can quite easily be missed.
No such luck today with a morning and late afternoon session there in real grizzly conditions with poor light, misty low scud clouds and constant drizzle on a moderate W>5 this morning turning SW>3 this afternoon.
Nothing but small gulls and Mallards on the water whilst the fields held, more gulls, 3 Mistle Thrush, 7 Stock Dove and several Fieldfare and Redwing.
The weather proved good for the big gulls with 28 Herring and 41 Lesser Black Backed moving through >W which kept me occupied through the morning watch but this move had dried up by late afternoon.
A shout this morning from Pete Smith with c 100 Pink Footed Geese over Shibden, Queensbury heading west but the cloud at Leeshaw too low to pick them up .
