Starlings piling in to roost
Going down in trees in top car park.
Good conditions for vis mig this morning but with most birds now gone the only contenders this morning for me were several squadrons of Starlings all moving >NW in fast and low migration mode.
Meanwhile at the Oxenhope watch point HC /DCB got what has got to be the sighting of the year with 4 Great White Egrets straight over the watch point.
The single I got at Fly Flatts was awesome to watch but 4 must have been amazing. Trust Howard to beat my one by getting 4, mind you he always used to beat me at school and its carried on from there.
Well done lads for putting an amazing number of hours into the vis mig watch in all weather conditions. Proof yet again that you,ve got to get out there to get rewarded.
Awaiting permission to blog image of the 4 Egrets taken over Skipton.
With a child minding venue this afternoon and a deliver back to her home through the dreaded Kings Cross and Sowerby Bridge I was just left with enough time to check the water at Ogden before dark.
On arrival at 1600 hrs the weather was calm with the sun already gone down and birds were going to roost. Around 100 Redwing dropped into the plantation at the northern end followed by about the same number of Chaffinch but way too far in the bad light to check for Brambling.
Around 300 BH gulls were on and around the water but no big gulls present, one gull having a new ring for the area going by my records, Left leg Black X14C , right leg metal ring with figures 1A visible. Details to come when submitted. All but a few of the gulls had left for the Oxenhope roost by the time I came away.
As I was coming away along the promenade a massive flock of Starlings flew from Mixenden reservoir area and dropped down into trees along the edge of the top car park. An interesting 30 minutes at last light.
