Herring or Yellow Legged ?

Took this long distant shot of a single gull this morning at Fly Flatts thinking of Herring gull and dismissed it till Ive just been through the photos, looks good for Yellow Legged to me going by the head shape and bill.

The plumage looks to be 2nd year and I've been on the Gull Research Website looking at tail projection and primary markings. Unfortunately both Herring and YLG are too close to call at this age, given the image quality. Interesting though and of course we are entering YLG season.

Thanks for that Nigel. Unfortunately the bird was off before I even got down the hillside and went >W away from me so only the one mega distant shot but as you say, something to out for now, July usually being the best month
