Who,s the moth expert ?

A poor photo taken with my phone as it landed briefly but this giant moth, the biggest I,ve ever seen being nearly the size of a Goldcrest, was flying around in Marks and Spencers Halifax this afternoon causing some real panic with people ducking and diving out of its way.
Does anyone know what it is and where it originates from ?

Hi Brian
Eyed Hawk-moth, fairly common, more so in the south. If disturbed by potential predators, the species has an effective startle display, flashing open the wings to reveal the large eye-spots and rocking from side to side.
