Birding in the wind and rain, Fly Flatts,(permit only)

  • No morning visit today and by the time I got free at late afternoon the wind had increased to W>6 and heavy horizontal rain showers. The water was very rough with breakers along the east bank and white horses over the water.
  •                                             A small number of House Martins , compared to the big numbers reported moving today, passed through , along with a few Swallows and 2 very high Swift.
  • A drake Tufted was battling the waves whilst only 4 gulls were on the north shore , which is now a great distance from the slipway so it means a long walk on the west bank to get anywhere near within range. The gulls were interesting with 2 adult Herring, 1 second summer Herring and the usual adult Yellow Legged Herring gull. I walked half way on the west bank, only to abort the idea due to the blasting wind and rain.
  •                                          The water has risen again considerably since yesterday with very little banking left, just a fringe along the south bank and a portion at the north end, hopefully to pick up a Ruff, with several moving at the moment. My last autumn report of Ruff at this site was 2/9/2018.
