1st winter Herring gull >SW
Big move of Lapwings, >NW
A pleasant morning at Fly Flatts with 100 % light grey cloud cover on a SW>4 wind with good visibility.
Still struggling to get any winter wildfowl on the water with just 18 Canadas and 2 Mallard whilst 2 Greylag flew through >E. A single 1st winter Herring gull headed >SW, this being the only gull seen throughout the watch. Two Raven and 2 Woodpigeon flew over the moor but the birds of the morning were Lapwing with a big move on comprising of several groups, the largest being 45, all very high and direct >NW with a total count of 310 in one and a half hours watch.
No Whoopers on Cold Edge or Mixenden as I passed.
As I drove away from the top gate a cracking male Merlin swooped in front of the car flying just above the road in front of me before veering off across the Flat moor.
Footnote.... I learn today that the reservoir is going to be drained completely by the end of July !
