Annual autumn Mallard gathering on the lagoons
53 present
With no shoreline and difficulty in sorting the gulls with the glare of the sun on the water I spent the time sky watching from the hide area which paid dividends with a good move of raptors.
A distant Buzzard sp with a very bright yellow Cere was heavily mobbed over Stubden as it headed >ESE whilst a second Buzzard sp soared over Top Withins but was lost in the cloud before I could get a direction on it. Meanwhile a Peregrine headed >S over the Nab and a very high Sparrowhawk headed >SE.
Each year at this time Mallard numbers build up on the small lagoons for some unknown reason with 53 present but usually rises higher.
23 Chaffinch on the remaining piece of shoreline in the NW corner was interesting.
