2 Raven tumbling over the Nab
Merlin over
Fly Flatts 0715 1000hrs Frosty with a cold NW>4. Clear then thick fog before clearing again.
A good start with 2 distant Ravens calling and tumbling above the Nab, these were also being watched from the Oxenhope watchpoint. Minutes later a Merlin came over high and >S, this also passed over the lads at Oxenhope. Otherwise skies were quiet apart from a small group of 30 Redwing >SW.
Then it all went horribly wrong ! A call from DCB saying a thick bank of fog was coming over the moor in my direction but could possibly burn off before arriving. Within a few minutes it struck and I was left in dense cloud and horizontal visibility down to a few feet although I could just see a hint of blue sky above.
I called DCB to say he was right when suddenly he shouted PINKIES, I,ll call you back, but by then I could hear the geese coming and suddenly the sound was deafening with , as I found out later, around 650 Pink Footed Geese low over my head which I could just make out their images through the fog. After a quick burst of foul language and the thoughts of throwing my camera in the water I called NK who I knew was on Soil Hill and luckily he was above the cloud and got them, hopefully there,ll be photos on Queensburybirder blog.
To make it worse, Nigel said the Skeins were going right over my house and when I got home several of the neighbours said, " Did you see all those geese", grrr.
About ten minutes after the geese had gone over me the fog cleared and it was just like nothing had happened, the roller coaster ride of birding.
