The Breeding Season

As from now until the end of the breeding season birds of a sensitive nature will be omitted from this blog due to a small percentage of undesirables who take their pleasure from egg collecting, nest destroying and the killing and trapping of birds.
Reports of non breeding birds moving through the area will still be published. BS

A trip round

Mixed finches at the Delvers
Thrushes etc, wires full at the Delvers
Its a Brambling, honest

A calm frosty morning with early fine snow and mist in the valleys.

A disappointing morning when I started at Cold Edge Dams only to find the top dam frozen and the lower dam 60% frozen hence only Mallard present but the bonus of a fly over Peregrine.
Hunter Hill was quiet but scoping Mixenden dam I found Goosander, Goldeneye, 2 Cormorants and around 200 small gulls.
Stopping at DJS s reported area at the Delvers the scene was amazing with around 150 finches, Chaffs, Greens and Gold with at least 8 Brambling. The field and wires were full of Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare and Redwing with at least 3 Mipits.
I called at Mixenden res on the way back just in time to see the Cormorants flushed by anglers which then flew off south, the birds that is, not the anglers.

That lot was well worth the round trip. Is the Delvers that alehouse en route to Cold Edge?

Thats right Nigel, the birds are in and around the horse field behind the pub, well worth a visit if you have chance as long as they stick around

Nothing at the Delvers at 3 pm this afternoon, same thing one day last week. Mornings seem to be much better for the finches. I chucked seed over into the field this afternoon!

Where abouts was the Little Owl Bri as Jeff Cox is logging all Little Owl sites this year.

Not a bad haul today then.

The Little Owl was where Ive had it a few times before. If you walk down the track from the road to the new fence, instead of turning right to your watchpoint go left and through the gate then right to go down the track above the gulley of trees the bird is nearly always 20yds down on the left hand wall right by the track.
If you want to let me have Jeffs e mail by e mail to me I,ll send any future Little Owl sightings on to him.

Thanks for the info Brian - I will let you have Jeff's email, will you send him this detail too, of the one at Hunter Hill.

I think they call that spot Slaughter Gap -I wonder what went on there years ago - Hunter Hill and Slaughter Gap - must have been a bad place to fly past??!!
