The Breeding Season

As from now until the end of the breeding season birds of a sensitive nature will be omitted from this blog due to a small percentage of undesirables who take their pleasure from egg collecting, nest destroying and the killing and trapping of birds.
Reports of non breeding birds moving through the area will still be published. BS

Late Wheatears

Re DJS s late Wheatear( Calderbirds) it inspired me to check for late birds and found in that previous years moving birds have been reported until the end of December and returning birds as early as February 11th.
Also there has been a report of a bird over wintering in Sussex. None of these sightings were local and I think Daves report must be the latest sighting for this area, unless you know differant?

I checked Nick Dawtrey's "Birds of Halifax" which summarises records up to the end of 1999, the last date he gives is 23 October 1976 (at Rishworth). Not had chance to check bird reports since then so there may be a later date in those somewhere, I have it in my mind that Brian L once had a very late bird at Whiteholme but don't know the exact date.

I find it amazing that a summer migrant can be seen in our area in 9 months of a year (or maybe more)?!
